The pine family systematically belongs to the Coniferopsida Class and Pinales

Characteristics if the Pinaceae family:

  • a family rich in economically important tree species appearing mainly in the northern hemisphere
  • the leaves are needle-shaped, spirally arranged individually, or in bundles
  • flowers - monoecious trees, flowers of different sexes in cones
  • the fruit is a cone composed of a spindle and spirally arranged seed scales (fruit scales - carpels) and supporting  scales (supporting bracts) - under each seed scale there are usually two winged seeds
  • in terms of the number of species, this family is one of the richest in Slovakia, it is systematically classified into eight genera:
  1. Abies
  2. Pseudotsuga
  3. Tsuga
  4. Picea
  5. Pinus
  6. Larix
  7. Pseudolarix
  8. Cedrus
