The pine family systematically belongs to the Coniferopsida Class and Pinales
Characteristics if the Pinaceae family:
- a family rich in economically important tree species appearing mainly in the northern hemisphere
- the leaves are needle-shaped, spirally arranged individually, or in bundles
- flowers - monoecious trees, flowers of different sexes in cones
- the fruit is a cone composed of a spindle and spirally arranged seed scales (fruit scales - carpels) and supporting scales (supporting bracts) - under each seed scale there are usually two winged seeds
- in terms of the number of species, this family is one of the richest in Slovakia, it is systematically classified into eight genera:
- Abies
- Pseudotsuga
- Tsuga
- Picea
- Pinus
- Larix
- Pseudolarix
- Cedrus
