  • the leaves are simple, arranged alternately, and can be deciduous or evergreen
  • the trees are monoecious, and flowers are unisexual:
    • ♂ - in catkins
    • ♀ - sit in a cup-shaped flower cup
  • the fruit is a nut in a cup - within a cup-like husk
  • he family includes 6 genera with several hundred species
  • in Slovakia, there are two native genera:
    • genus  Fagus (beech)
    • genus Quercus (oak)
  • in addition to these two genera, in the warmer regions of Slovakia, there is also one representative of a non-native genus, the chestnut (Castanea) - sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa).
