Habitus

it is a shrub 2 - 4 m high, crown is irregular, branches rounded
bark is light brownish-grey, later dark grey, finely longitudinally fissured

Buds

buds are placed directly opposite
two types of buds are formed:
- leaf buds - are oblong-ovate, 10-15 x 4-6 mm in size, naked - the vernation (veining) of the leaves is clearly visible
- flower buds (terminal) - are broadly cup-shaped, long-pointed, 8-12 x 10-15 mm in size, covered with several integumentary scales
both types of buds are whitish-tomentose

Shoots

summer shoots are straight, yellow-brown, rough and densely tomentose, later brownish-grey, glabrous

Leaves (assimilation organs)

the leaves are simple, broadly to oblong-ovate, shortly acuminate, round or cordate at the base, roughly serrate along the margin
the upper side is sparsely hairy with impressed veins
the lower side is densely tomentose and the veins are clearly prominent
the petiole is about 1 cm long

Flowers

the wood is monosexual, flowers are bisexual, white, grouped into a terminal 6-10 cm wide, panicle-like spike
it flowers in May – June

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is an obovate drupe, red, black when ripe, 10-12 x 7-10 mm large
it contains a brown ellipsoidal 8 x 6 mm large ribbed stone
it ripens in IX - X

Extension

original distribution is in southern Europe, but it also extends to Central Europe, Asia Minor and the Caucasus
in Slovakia from the lowest altitudes to 1,320 m above the sea level
it grows mainly in forest-steppes, on rocky dry slopes in scrub, often on limestone

Ecology

it is a light and heat-loving woody plant
it is resistant to drought and frost

- in autumn with fruits and red-colored leaves
it is a valuable park tree
