Habitus

it is a shrub 2 - 3 m tall with irregular crown
the bark is brown, later light grey with prominent lenticels

Buds

the buds are arranged in a spiral, the terminal one is significantly larger
lateral ones are conical, long pointed, pressed to the twig
there are several covering scales, they are dark red, lighter along the margin (whitishly hairy)

Shoots

shoots are greenish to reddish, first tomentose, later glabrous

Leaves (assimilation organs)

assimilative organs (leaves) are simple, broadly ovate to round, 2 - 4 x 1.5 - 2 cm large, entire-margined, only slightly serrate in the upper third
the apex of the leaf ends in a sharp short tip, the base of the leaf is rounded to broadly wedge-shaped
the upper side is dark green, the lower side is lighter
when young, the leaves are whitish tomentose, later glabrous, the hairs remain only on the lower side of the main vein
the petiole is 8 - 15 mm long

Flowers

the wood is monoecious, flowers bisexual, 5-flowered, white, reddish at the margin
they are grouped in 3 - 8-flowered panicles, flowers grow on brachyblasts
it flowers in May after the leaves develop

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a globose achene, about 8 mm in size, bluish-black, with a persistent calyx
the achene is sweet, edible, it ripens in August

Extension

it is originally widespread in Southern and Central Europe, Asia Minor and the Caucasus
in Slovakia it grows on soils with a limestone base from the hills to the mountains (up to approx. 1,000 m above the sea level)

Ecology

it is a light-loving, drought-resistant woody plant

Significance

it is decorative with flowers, but also with fruits
it is a protected species by law (less threatened - LR)
