Flowers

it is a woody plant (shrub), monoecious; flowers are bisexual; blooms in July–August
flowers are 5-merous, pink, and clustered in terminal racemes 10 – 20 cm long

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a capsule, 10 x 5 mm in size, narrow, pyramidal-pointed, and grey-green
it splits into three valves, releasing a large number of seeds
the seed is tiny and downy
it ripens in October

Extension

it is originally distributed across Western and Central Europe, extending eastwards to the Dnieper River
in Slovakia, it grows along the Danube, though it is more frequently found along rivers in the north—such as the Orava, the Váh (as far as Beckov), and the Belá, Poprad, and Hornád rivers

Ecology

it is a light-loving woody plant; moisture-demanding but undemanding regarding soil
cold-tolerant
it grows on sandy and gravelly river and stream deposits, from which it is eventually displaced by stands of willows (Salix)—such as white willow (Salix alba), crack willow (Salix fragilis), rosemary-leaved willow (Salix eleagnos), and purple willow (Salix purpurea)—and by grey alder (Alnus incana) stands

Significance

it is significant as a pioneer species on gravelly alluvial deposits and, to some extent, as a species that stabilizes riverbanks
