Habitus

  • it is a tree growing to a height of 35 - 35 m with a spreading crown
  • bark is grey-brown, smooth, later relatively shallow longitudinally fissured bark is formed

Buds

  • buds are arranged crosswise oppositely
  • individual buds are slender, conical, sharply pointed
  • terminal bud is larger, lateral ones are smaller, more or less pressed to the twig
  • covering scales are numerous, dark brown, dull

Shoots

  • shoots are straight, brownish-red, covered with small, convex whitish lenticels

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • the leaves are simple, palmately 3 - 5 lobed, up to 20 cm large, only slightly wider than they are long
  • the edges are sparsely and distinctly toothed, dark green on the upper side, light green on the lower side with hairs in the vein axils
  • the shape of the leaves is similar to the Acer platanoides

Flowers

  • it is a monoecious tree with bisexual flowers
  • it blooms before the leaves develop, or at the same time
  • flowers are yellow-green, grouped in hanging panicles

Fruits – seeds

  • fruit is a winged achene, wings are practically parallel
  • achene with a wing is up to 2.5 cm large

Extension

  • in eastern part of North America
  • in Slovakia it occurs only as a cultivated species

Ecology

  • its occurrence is tied to areas with a colder climate
  • in more southern areas its occurrence is limited to cold ravines and moist plains
  • it is undemanding to soil, it does not tolerate waterlogged sites

Significance

  • the sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is one of the most important trees in Canada
  • it is a source of sap, which is used to prepare maple syrup
  • in Slovakia it is important as an ornamental park tree, especially in autumn with golden-colored leaves
