Habitus

it is a shrub to small tree 2 - 12 m high
crown is spherical to broadly ovate
bark is grey-brown
bork is greyish, cracked into thin oblong slices

Buds

buds are arranged in a spiral, 2 - 4 mm in size, conical, pointed, rounded at the end
the covering scales are numerous, dark purple to blackish

Shoots

shoots are olive brown to reddish purple
when cut, they secrete a white juice that smells like carrots

Leaves (assimilation organs)

leaves are simple, obovate to round, 5 - 10 x 3 - 7 cm large
rounded at the apex, or shallowly heart-shaped, entire margin
upper side is dark green, dull, lower side is grey-green
stalk is 2 - 5 cm long

Flowers

the tree is monoecious, the flowers are bisexual, but also unisexual, small, yellow-green, grouped into conspicuous terminal panicles, which are 13–30 cm long

the fruit is a false nut

Extension

originally in southern Europe around the Mediterranean Sea, Central Asia, China to the Himalayas
in Slovakia it grows up to 850 m above the sea level in three known locations:
1. Timoradza hill near Bánovce nad Bebravou
2. Gaderská valley
3. near the village of Veľká Lodina

Ecology

it is a heat and light-loving woody plant undemanding to moisture
it is a species growing on devastated areas, mainly on limestones

Significance

it is decorative with flowers - hair-like inflorescences
it is used in plantings in parks and in creating greenery
color forms are also known - Royal Purple
