Buds

buds themselves are broadly ovate, pointed, sessile
there are several integumentary scales, brown to reddish

Shoots

shoots are thin, rod-shaped, light brown to reddish, later yellowish-grey, glabrous

Leaves (assimilation organs)

leaves are simple, pinnate, 2 - 6 x 2 - 5 cm large
they are quite variable in shape, from ovate-round to oblong-ovate, pointed at the apex, round at the base, with entire margin
the petiole is 0.6 - 1.0 cm long
on young shoots the leaves are up to pinnately lobed
upper side is dark green, lower side is bluish, sparsely hairy

Flowers

tree (shrub) is monoecious, flowers are bisexual
it flowers from VI - VIII (IX)
flowers are on short stalks, whitish pink to reddish, grouped in dense terminal racemes

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is an 8 - 15 mm large, irregularly spherical berry, white, juicy, it contains two seeds
it ripens in IX – XI

Extension

originally on the North American continent in a wide area in southern Canada and the northern part of the USA, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean
it was introduced to Europe in 1817

Ecology

it grows on mountain slopes, usually on dry stony soils, but also on river banks
partial shade to light-loving woody plant, undemanding to soil, tolerates polluted urban environments

Significance

it is a decorative woody plant with long flowering, white fruits
it is suitable for hedges – it tolerates pruning well
