Leaves (assimilation organs)

they are highly variable in shape:
- on the lower part of the shoots and on non-flowering shoots, the leaves are broadly ovate to elliptical, blunt, entire-margined, 4 – 10 × 3.5 – 6.0 cm, with short stalks (2 – 4 mm)
- on the upper part of the shoots and on flowering shoots, leaf pairs are fused at the base, and the uppermost two pairs fuse into a single, broadly elliptical to orbicular leaf through the center of which the stem grows

in Slovakia, it is likely a permanently naturalized non-native species, growing in warmer regions (the Tríbeč and Muráň mountain ranges)

Ecology

it grows on sunny slopes and in vineyards; more rarely found in floodplain forests

Significance

it is valued for its ornamental flowers
it is suitable for covering fences and various garden structures, much like common ivy (Hedera helix)
