Habitus

it is a shrub up to 2 m high, branches are straight or even prostrate
bark is reddish-brown, later dark brown with convex lenticels
on older branches the bark is slightly longitudinally fissured

Shoots

shoots are brownish-green, tomentose, later reddish-brown, glabrous, older are dark brown

the leaves are simple, pinnate, basically ovate in shape, 30 - 50 x 15 - 30 mm large, pointed, with a fine thorny protrusion at the end, which is a continuation of the midrib
the base is rounded to obliquely wedge-shaped, entire-margined, along the margin they are tomentose
the upper side is dark green, almost glabrous, the lower side is light green, densely greenish-grey tomentose
the petiole is 5 - 10 mm long, tomentose with two fine linear bracts

Flowers

the tree is monoecious, the flowers are bisexual, five-petaled, pinkish
the flowers are grouped in 2-4 in drooping clusters at the end of shortened branches

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a red globose and glabrous capsule about 8 mm in size, which usually contains two 4 - 5 mm long seeds (compressed, broadly ovoid to oval)
they ripen in September

Extension

in a large part of Europe, in the north to southern Scandinavia, in the east it extends through the Ukraine to the Caucasus and Asia Minor
it is scattered in Slovakia, mainly on limestone substrates up to 1,550 m above the sea level (Veľká Fatra)
