Habitus

it is a small shrub 30 - 50 cm high
stems are creeping, rooting
branches are protruding or erect, rounded, bare
bark is light brown

leaves are simple, broadly or oblong-ovate, entire-margined, 15 - 25 x 10 - 15 mm large
rounded at the apex, wedge-shaped narrowed at the base, flat or slightly rolled
on the upper side they are grey-green, on the lower side lighter with pronounced venation, deciduous

Flowers

shrub monoecious, flowers are bisexual, it blooms in V - VI
flowers are white, reddish at the top
flowers grow mostly at the top of short side branches in sparse panicles, 2 - 4 on 4 - 8 mm long pedicels

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a pear-shaped or spherical berry about 7 mm in size, dark blue, with a few seeds
the fruit is edible, the juice is colorless, it can cause vomiting if ingested !
it ripes in August - September

Extension

it was originally widespread throughout the northern hemisphere, especially in peat bogs and uplands
in Slovakia it grows in the Záhorská Nížina, in the peat bogs of Orava, but especially in the High and Low Tatras up to an altitude of approximately 2,360 m above the sea level.
