Habitus

it is a shrub 10 - 30 cm high with prostrate, ascending branches

upper side is dark green, shiny
lower side is greyish with a pronounced midrib
both sides are dotted
leaves are sessile, leathery, overwintering !

Flowers

it is a monoecious tree with bisexual flowers, 4-petaled, pinkish, rarely white, fragrant
it flowers from April to June after the leaves develop

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a brownish-red, drying to dry drupe, enclosed in a flower cup until ripe

Extension

it was originally widespread in the mountains of southern and central Europe up to western Ukraine
in Slovakia, there is island-like distribution almost throughout the entire territory up to an altitude of about 1,100 m above the sea level - Záhorská nížina, Považská hornatina, Veľká Fatra, Nízke Tatry, Slovenský Raj, Branisko, ...
it grows in lighted forests and scrublands, in steppe meadows, but mainly on carbonates
