Habitus
it is a multi-stemmed shrub up to 5 - 8 m
the crown is broadly ovate to spherical, branches ± straight
the bark is brown, later dark grey, longitudinally cracked bork
Buds
they are alternately built, ovate to spherical, 5 - 6 x 3 - 4 mm large
they have yellow-green wrapping scales with a brown border
Shoots
they are straight, round, greenish-brown, coarsely glandular hairy, later glabrous
with significant whitish lenticels
Leaves (assimilation organs)
leaves are simple, inverted ovate to round, 6 - 12 x 4 - 8 cm large
they are distinctly short-pointed at the end, heart-shaped at the base
the edge is coarsely double-sawed
the upper side is darker green, the underside is lighter
the stalk is 1 – 2 cm, hairy
Flowers
it is a monoecious woody plant with flowers of different sexes
♂ - catkins are established in autumn, they are 2 - 3 cm large, cylindrical, hanging , 5 - 7 cm long in spring after flowering
♀ - flowers have the shape of a vegetation bud - crimson red stigmas protrude at the top
Fruits – seeds
the fruit is a nut, 1 - 2 cm in size, with a green, later brown bract-like shell at the base
it ripens in autumn
Extension
originally in almost all of Europe
in Slovakia from the lowest altitudes to about 1 000 (max. 1 400) m above the sea level.
it mostly forms the undergrowth of deciduous forests
Ecology
it is a sunny woody plant, it can also tolerate shading, it grows mainly on the edges of forests, clearings and borders
it is undemanding to the soil, resistant to temperature fluctuations
Significance
it is a fruit-bearing tree species (food for forest animals and birds)
it is relatively aggressive on loose areas (after mining, calamity)
wood is suitable for the production of handles (light, strong, flexible)
as an ornamental tree in horticulture, where its various forms are used (red-leafed, pruned, twisted, mourning, ...)
