Habitus

  • semi-parasitic shrub growing in the crowns of trees
  • the crown is spherical, 0.5 – 1.0 m in diameter, densely branched
  • bark is green for a long time, older bark is gray

Shoots

  • the young shoots are yellow-green, forked

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • the leaves are simple, persistent (non-deciduous), lanceolate to oblong ovate, rounded at the tip, or slightly indented, measuring 4 - 7 x 2 - 10 cm, leathery, sessile
  • the venation is parallel

Flowers

  • it is a  dioecious plant
  • flowers are unisexual
  • it blooms in II – III

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is cream-white (up to yellow-white) spherical berry, 8 - 10 mm large with sticky fleshy pericarp
  • it contains one ovate, compressed seed measuring 5 - 7 x 4 mm
  • it ripens in XI – XII

Extension

  • originally expanded in Central to Southern Europe in Asia Minor and the Caucasus
  • in Slovakia it is a semiparasite on coniferous trees (fir, pine) and deciduous trees (poplar, willow, linden, maple, apple, alder, birch)
