Habitus

  • it is a shrub or a small tree reaching a height of 4 - 6 m
  • the crown is spherical, irregular
  • the bark is light grey, on older trunks forming a greyish to dark grey net-like cracked bark, split into solid shallow rectangular plates

Buds

  • they are crosswise opposite to slightly opposite
  • covering scales green with a brown margin

Shoots

  • they are  rounded, green (up to purplish)
  • four brown cork strips (often winged) usually form on the young stems, which are also retained on the trunk

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • they are simple, oppositely arranged
  • individual leaves are lanceolate to ovate, 5 - 10 x 2 - 4 cm in size (deciduous)
  • they are finely toothed along the margin
  • upper side is dark green - matte, the vein pattern is slightly pressed from above
  • the petiole 1 - 1.5 cm long

Flowers

  • flowers are bisexual, they bloom in May – June
  • they are grouped into poor erect spicules
  • the individual flowers are greenish to yellowish-white

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a four-chambered fleshy capsule, initially green, turning red when ripe, 1.0 – 1.5 cm in size, on a 2 - 3 cm long stem
  • in each chamber, there are 1 - 2 oval seeds, 5 - 7 x 3 - 4 mm in size, wrapped in an orange husk – coated seed (they are poisonous!)

Extension

  • Eurasian species
  • in Slovakia it occurres from lowlands to 500 (700) m above  the sea level
  • it grows in floodplain forests in lowlands to hills (in oak forests to beech forests)

Ecology

  • it tolerates shading
  • it requires high soil moisture

Significance

  • it has no economic significance
  • from the perspective of stand structure - as a filler tree (shrub)
  • it is decorative in autumn with red fruits and colorful leaves - thus also as a park tree
