(Euonymus verrucosus Scop.)
Habitus
- it is a shrub 2 - 4 m high
- branches are straight, green, densely covered with dark warty lenticels
- the bark (cortex) is green, later dark is grey to blackish, longitudinally pale cracked
Buds
- the buds are arranged oppositely (or nearly oppositely)
- the buds are 3 - 7 x 2 - 3 mm in size, oval, pointed
- the husk scales are green with a brown margin
Shoots
- young branches are slender, green, thin, straight, closely dotted with brown to dark lenticels
Leaves (assimilation organs)
- the leaves are simple, lanceolate to elongated oval, long and sharply pointed, wedge-shaped at the base, 4 - 9 x 1.5 - 4 cm in size
- they are finely serrated along the margin
- the petiole is 3 - 8 mm long
Flowers
- are bisexual, four-parted, greenish-yellow
- they bloom from May to June.
Fruits – seeds
- the fruit is a four-chambered capsule, red (also yellow), 8 - 12 mm in size
- the stalk is thin, 4 - 5 cm long
- the seeds are oval, black, shiny, 5 - 7 x 3 - 4 mm in size, covered with a red-orange aril
Extension
- it is Eurasian species
- in Slovakia it occures from lowlands to hills up to about 400 m above the sea level
- in the warmest areas of southern Slovakia
Ecology
- it is a semi-shade tree of lighted forests in warmer areas - forest steppes
- it tolerates drought, it is sensitive to frost and low temperatures
- it is currently rather rare (Burda - Kováčovské hills, Devínska Kobyla)
