Habitus

it is a shrub up to 1 – 3 m high, or a supporting liana climbing up to 10 m hight
branches are arched, covered with firm, sickle-shaped thorns bent downwards
thorns are of cutaneous origin

they are composed of 4 - 6 pairs of individual leaves
individual leaves are ovate to elliptical, finely doubly serrate along the periphery

originally in Europe, Asia Minor, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North Africa
in Slovakia from the lowlands to the mountains, on stony and rocky slopes, borders, on the edges of forests

it is a light-loving woody plant, drought-resistant

Significance

it is a relatively variable species
it is used as a rootstock for growing cultivars in ornamental horticulture
it is a fruit-bearing shrub, the fruits are rich in vitamin "C"
as a landscape element, especially during flowering
