Habitus

it is a shrub 1 - 2 m high, crown is denser , branches are straight
bark is brown-red, later grey-brown

the leaves are simple, broadly ovate, bluntly pointed to rounded, 3 - 5 x 2 - 4 cm in size, entire margin at the apex with a fine spiny protrusion, which is a continuation of the main vein
the upper side is dark green, shiny, sparsely hairy
the lower side is light green, hairy
the petiole is 3 - 5 mm long, hairy

Flowers

it is a monoecious tree, flowers are bisexual, white to pinkish
they grow on shortened branches of 3-4 in hanging clusters
it blooms in May

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a globose capsule about 10 mm in size, dark blue to dark purple (sometimes black) when ripe, with a scaly appearance
it contains mostly three 4 - 6 mm long seeds
it ripens in September

Extension

it was originally widespread in Central Europe, from where it extends to southern Siberia
it is not found in southern Europe
in Slovakia it grows scattered to rare, mainly on rocky (basic) substrates and rocks up to the subalpine level

Ecology

it is a light-loving, drought-resistant species
it grows mainly on sunny slopes and in forest-steppes
