Habitus

  • it is a tree 10 – 12 m high, crown spherical to widely spreading
  • branches are thick
  • bark is greenish-brown, later grey-brown
  • bork is brownish-grey, cracked in longitudinal plates

Buds

  • buds are spirally arranged, ovate, obtuse, sessile
  • covering scales are usually three, reddish-brown, at least hairy along the margin

Shoots

shoots are greenish-brown to reddish-brown when young, white tomentose

on older branches there is a numerous formation of brachyblasts and spines of stem origin

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • leaves are 30 – 60 x 20 - 40 mm large, simple, broadly ovate, finely serrated along the margin
  • the underside is lighter, at least on the veins tomentose
  • the petiole is 15 – 30 mm long, hairy

Flowers

  • the tree is monoecious, the flowers are bisexual, 5-petaled, white, the corolla petals are pinkish on the outside
  • the flowers grow in tufted racemes
  • it flowers in May

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a 20 - 40 mm large, yellow, spherical achene (planca)
  • it ripens in September to October

Extension

  • originally almost all of Europe, in the north about 61° N. W. latitude
  • in Slovakia it grows on sunny shrubby slopes, forest-steppes from lowlands to 900 (max. 1,060) m a.s.l. 

Ecology

  • it is a partial shade-loving woody plant, resistant to low temperatures, drought-tolerant
  • it grows well on moist, nutritious, alkaline to acidic soils

Significance

  • it is a fruit-bearing tree (food for forest animals)
  • it is a valuable landscape element
  • it is decorative when in bloom
