Habitus

  • it is a shrub to tree growing to a height of 12 – 20 m
  • the crown is broadly ovate to obovate, dense
  • the bark is long smooth, greyish, only later shallowly longitudinally fissured

Buds

  • buds are spirally arranged, ovate-acuminate, sessile, 6 - 10 x 4 - 5 mm in size
  • the covering scales are green with a brown margin, tomentose when young

Shoots

  • shoots are straight, rounded, light brown when young, white tomentose, later glabrous
  • shortened shoots (brachyblasts) are ringed, bumpy

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • leaves are simple, oblong-elliptic to round, shortly acuminate, round to wedge-shaped at the base, 6 - 14 x 5 - 8 cm large
  • they are double-serrate along the margin, white hairy when young, later the upper side is dark green shiny, the lower side is white tomentose
  • the leaves are relatively stiff - leathery
  • the petiole is tomentose 1 - 2 cm long

Flowers

  • the tree is monoecious, the flowers are bisexual, five-petaled, white
  • the calyx is white tomentose
  • the flowers grow in a tufted panicle
  • it flowers from May to June

 

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a barrel-shaped to spherical red capsule, 1.5 x 1 cm in size, containing 2 to 4 drop-shaped brown seeds
  • the capsule is white tomentose at least around the calyx
  • it ripens in IX – X

Extension

  • naturally in southern and central Europe
  • in Slovakia from 370 to 1,310 (1,550) m a.s.l. in rugged rocky terrain, mainly on limestone
  • it grows in deciduous forests mainly with oaks, but also with European beech in warm and dry habitats

Ecology

  • it is a light-loving woody plant resistant to drought and extreme temperatures

Significance

  • it is a pioneer tree with a soil protection function
  • it is a decorative tree due to the color of its leaves flowers and fruits
  • it also provides high-quality wood
