Habitus

it is a shrub 1 - 3 (5) m high
branches are erect, broom-like
bark is green, later grey-green, reticulately fissured

Shoots

shoots are thin, green (remain green even in winter), longitudinally grooved (5-sided)

Leaves (assimilation organs)

leaves are dichotomous:
1. first they are formed palmately folded – tripartite (they are in the lower part of the bush)
2. after flowering, simple leaves are formed in the upper part of the shoots
individual leaves are obovate, pointed to dissected at the end, the leaves are 6 - 15 x 2 - 5 mm in size

Flowers

it is a monoecious tree, flowers are bisexual, yellow
they grow singly or in pairs from the leaf axils on 1 - 2 cm long stalks

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a compressed pod 40 - 70 x 10 mm large, dark brown to black when ripe with long whitish hairs especially on the seams
the pod contains several seeds, which are 3 - 4 x 2 - 3 mm large, ellipsoid, slightly compressed. yellow-green
the pods ripen from August to October

it is a partial shade tree, drought tolerant
it grows on acidic soils
it is sensitive to frost

Significance

it is an ornamental shrub:
- during flowering with abundant yellow flowers
- later with fruits
- and in winter with green broom-like branches
