Habitus

it is a decumbent shrub 10 - 30 cm high, forming tufts, forkedly branched
bark is reddish-brown, later dark grey, dull, longitudinally fissured, edges diverge from the trunk

Leaves (assimilation organs)

the leaves are simple, oblong-obovate (almost linear), entire, perennial
they are 20 - 25 x 3 - 4 mm large, leathery, the margin is rolled up
they are arranged in a spiral at the end of the shoots
the upper side is dark green shiny, the lower side is light green, whitish hairy

Flowers

it is a monoecious tree, flowers are bisexual, deep pink, strongly aromatic
it is flowering in May - June

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a light grey drupe with a hairy surface
it ripens quickly and falls off immediately

Extension

it grows only in the Muránské karst area - Muránska planina at an altitude of 900 - 1,250 m above the sea level on limestone rocks and terraces
it is a significant endemic of the Slovak Carpathians

it is a light-loving, heat-requiring species
