Habitus

  • it is a shrub 1.5 - 2.5 m high, irregular, densely branched, the branches are straight
  • the bark is reddish brown, peeling in thin gray-brown strips

Buds

  • buds are  opposite,  broadly ovate, sharply pointed, sessile, pressed to the branch
  • there are several covering scales, reddish-brown

Shoots

  • shoots are round, reddish brown, rough !
  • shoots are hollow, the stem is rusty!

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • the leaves are simple, ovate, pointed at the top, serrated along the margin, the serrations end in small reddish spines
  • the leaves are 4 - 10 x 3 - 5 cm in size, the petiole is short, the leaves are almost sessile

Flowers

  • the tree is monoecious, the flowers are bisexual, white to pinkish
  • they are grouped into abundant hanging terminal racemes 6 - 12 cm long
  • the flowers themselves are bell-shaped
  • it is flowering in May - June

Extension

  • originally in China and Japan

Significance

  • the tree is suitable for park and garden plantings in warmer areas
  • it tolerates dusty urban environments !
  • it is decorative especially with rich white flowers
