Habitus

it is a low shrub up to 0.1 - 1 m high, densely irregularly branched, branches are knotty, thorny
bark is grey to dark grey
bork is deciduous

Buds

buds are set obliquely opposite
buds are ovate, pointed, sessile, 3 - 4 x 2 - 3 mm in size
covering scales are dark brown

Shoots

shoots are yellowish to reddish brown
brachyblasts are numerous

Leaves (assimilation organs)

the leaves are simple, entire, lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, rarely almost round, 2 - 3 cm large
the margin is serrated to toothed
the leaves have 2 - 4 pairs of lateral apical veins
the petiole is 2 - 4 mm long

Flowers

flowers are unisexual, 4-flowered, grouped in poor axillary spikes
it flowers in April to May

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a 5 - 7 mm large spherical drupe, black, shiny, it contains 2 - 3 seeds

Extension

it is originally widespread in the mountains of southern Europe, on sunny rocky slopes, in forest-steppes, especially on limestone
in Slovakia, it occurs only in the warmest areas (Devínska Kobyla National Park)

Ecology

it thrives in sunny, dry, calcareous (to alkaline), humus-rich habitats
loamy and stony soils
it is resistant to drought and high temperatures

Significance

a legally protected, endangered and rare species (ENr)
if the shrub is obtained legally, it can be used as a glass plant
