Habitus

it is a shrub 2 - 5 m high, with spreading crown
bark is red, later grey
branches are long, slightly drooping at the ends

Buds

buds are arranged crosswise opposite
they are narrowly lanceolate, 4 - 5 x 2 mm large, sessile, pressed to the branch !
buds are naked (they do not have covering scales), densely rusty to blackish hairy

Shoots

shoots are straight, thin, red, green in shade
young shoots are appressed whitish hairy, later glabrous

Leaves (assimilation organs)

the leaves are simple, broadly ovate to elliptical, with entire margin, 4 - 10 x 2 - 6 cm large, pointed at the end, opposite
the leaves have 3 - 4 pairs of apical veins of the second order, the venation of the third order is prominent
the petiole is 1 - 1.5 cm long

Flowers

the wood is monosexual, with bisexual flowers, white
flowers are grouped in flat spikes at the end of this year's shoots
it flowers in May – June

Fruits – seeds

the fruit is a spherical drupe, 5 - 8 mm large, dark purple to black, white-dotted
the flesh is green, it contains one 4 - 5 mm large broadly ovoid, greenish-brown, grooved seed

Extension

almost in all of Europe to Siberia
in Slovakia from the lowest locations (alluvial forests) to approximately 600 m above the sea level
it mainly grows in alluvial forests and in warm hills

Ecology

it is a partially shaded woody plant, frost-resistant, more demanding on soil moisture
only rarely it grows on dry areas

Significance

in landscaping work
it is a decorative woody plant:
- in summer with abundant white flowers
- in autumn with red-colored leaves
in winter with red branches
it is also suitable for hedges
it stands out for its high stump and root regeneration !
