• leaves are simple, asymmetrical - asymmetric, doubly serrated at the margins
• flowers are hermaphroditic in clusters
• the fruit is a round-winged samara
• the genus includes about 18 species from the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere
• in Slovakia, the genus is represented by three species:
  1. Ulmus glabra (Mountain elm)
  2. Ulmus minor (Hairy-leaved elm)
  3. Ulmus laevis (Smooth-leaved elm)
