  • leaves are simple, palmate, alternate, mostly deciduous
  • monoecious trees (sometimes dioecious), flowers are bisexual
  • fruit is a multi-seeded berry
  • the genus includes about 150 species of the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere
  • four domestic species occur in Slovakia:
    1. Ribes alpinum (Alpine currant)
    2. Ribes petraeum (Rock currant)
    3. Ribes uva-cripsa (Gooseberry)
    4. Ribes nigrum (Black currant)
  • the taxonomy of this genus has not yet been satisfactorily resolved
