the individual leaves are elongated obovate, widest in the upper third, shortly sharply pointed at the apex, wedge-shaped at the base, slightly serrate along the margin, 8 - 15(- 20) x 4 - 6(- 8) cm large, dark green - matte on the upper side, grey-green on the lower side, hairy on the veins

it is a monoecious wood with bisexual flowers, white

originally in southeastern United States (Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina along the Savannah River)

Ecology

it is mainly found in floodplain forests along waterways
it is a shade tree growing in the undergrowth of the parent stand

it is an ornamental park shrub mainly during flowering with distinctive white flowers and in autumn with yellow-colored leaves
