Habitus

  • it is a shrubby tree with deciduous leaves
  • it grows to a height of 2 - 5 m and a width of up to 10 m

Buds

  • bud arrangement is crosswise opposite
  • buds are narrowly conical, non-sticky

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • the leaves are palmately compound, composed of 5 - 7 individual leaves
  • the individual leaves are elongated obovate, widest in the upper third, shortly sharply pointed at the apex, wedge-shaped at the base, slightly serrate along the margin, 8 - 15(- 20) x 4 - 6(- 8) cm large, dark green - matte on the upper side, grey-green on the lower side, hairy on the veins

Flowers

  • it is a monoecious wood with bisexual flowers, white
  • it is flowering in VII - VIII

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is an obovate capsule

Extension

  • originally in southeastern United States (Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina along the Savannah River)

Ecology

  • it is mainly found in floodplain forests along waterways
  • it is a shade tree growing in the undergrowth of the parent stand

Significance

  • it is an ornamental park shrub mainly during flowering with distinctive white flowers and in autumn with yellow-colored leaves
  • WARNING - bark, leaves and fruits are poisonous !!!
