Habitus

  • it is a shrub 2 - 3 m high, thornless,  relatively densely branched, branches are often bent
  • bark is light grey, later reddish grey

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • the leaves are simple, palmately lobed with 3 (5) lobes
  • they are blunt, roughly serrate along the margin, the middle lobe is the largest
  • the leaves are 4 - 5 x 3 - 4 cm in size
  • the petiole is 1 - 2 cm long (shorter than the leaf blade!)

Flowers

  • flowers are unisexual, incompletely dioecious in erect yellow-green clusters
  • it blooms IV to VI

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a spherical berry, red, sweet, about 7 mm in diameter
  • it contains several small yellow-brown seeds
  • it ripens in VII - VIII

Extension

  • it is originally widespread in southern and central Europe
  • in Slovakia it grows from 450 - 1,600 m a.s.l. up to the dwarf pine zone, mainly in light forests (oak, beech), on rocks, scree and in ravines

Ecology

  • it is a partial shade loving to shade tree, drought tolerant, resistant to extreme temperature fluctuations
  • it is rather demanding on nutrients

Significance

  • it is a fruit-bearing tree
  • it can be used in low hedges (tolerates pruning and transplanting)
