Habitus

  • it is a shrub up to 2 m high, without thorns !
  • branches are relatively thick

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • the leaves are simple, palmately 3-5 lobed, the lobes are pointed, coarsely toothed along the margin
  • the leaves are basically round in shape, about 10 cm large,  softly hairy on the underside
  • the petiole is up to 10 cm long (longer than the blade !)

Flowers

  • the tree (shrub) is monoecious
  • flowers are bisexual, pale pinkish-reddish in drooping racemes

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a spherical, bright red berry, sour!

Extension

  • in shady mountain forests of Europe
  • in Slovakia in higher mountain locations
  • it rises up to 1,700 m above the sea level (into the dwarf pine zone - Pinus mugo)

Ecology

  • it is a woody plant, more demanding on soil moisture and nutrients

Significance

  • it is a fruit-bearing tree (shrub)
  • it is one of the parent species of garden currants!
