Habitus

  • it is a shrub 2 - 3 m high,  erect, densely branched
  • the bark light brown, the bork is grayish, peeling in thin longitudinal slices

Leaves (assimilation organs)

  • the leaves are simple, palmately 3 to 5 lobed, 3 - 5 x 4 - 6 cm large
  • they are marginal entire, at the end of the lobes with 2 - 3 spikes
  • the petiole is 3 - 4 cm long

Flowers

  • the tree (shrub) is monoecious
  • flowers are bisexual, golden yellow to pinkish
  • they grow in sparse 5 to 15-flowered racemes
  • it blooms in May at the same time as the leaves develop

Fruits – seeds

  • the fruit is a  6 - 8 mm large spherical berry, dark red to brownish, shiny
  • it ripens in July

Extension

  • it was originally widespread in the western part of the North American continent
  • on the territory of Slovakia it occurs only as a cultivated species

Ecology

  • it is a semi-shaded tree that tolerates drought
  • it is resistant to frost

Significance

  • it is a fruit-bearing and very decorative plant during flowering with flowers, later with fruits and in autumn with leaves that turn red
  • it is used as a rootstock for high gooseberries
