the spruce genus includes more than 40 species of the temperate and cold zone of the northern hemisphere
from a forestry point of view, an important genus divided into two sections:

Eupicea - assimilation organs - The needles are square in cross-section (square to rhombic) with rows of vents on all sides, this section includes e.g.:

Picea abies (Norway spruce)
Picea pungens (Prickly spruce)
Picea engelmannii (Engelmann spruce)
Picea orientalis (Eastern spruce)
Picea glauca (White spruce)
Picea mariana (Black spruce)

Omorica - assimilation organs - the needles are flat in cross-section (round - similar to white fir) and on the reverse side with whitish bands of stomata. We include in this section:

Picea omorica (spruce Omorika - Omorika)
Picea breweriana (California spruce)
Picea sitchensis (Sitkan spruce)
