Leaves (assimilation organs)

assimilation organs needle-like , blue-green (light), 1.0-2.5 cm long, slightly bent, densely arranged around the entire twig
in cross-section square with rows of whitish vents (stripes) on the sides
distinctly aromatic when crushed

Flowers

monoecious woody plant flowers , heterosexual
♂ cones are oblong-ovoid, first reddish-purple, later yellowish-violet, 2.0 - 2.5 cm in size
♀ cones are broadly ovoid, crimson-red

Fruits – seeds

fruit is a cone, cylindrical, about 5 cm large, seed scales are sparse, oval ( a good distinguishing feature)
the seed is ovoid, 2 - 3 mm large, dark brown, placed in a spoon-like shape on a 7 - 10 mm long membranous wing

Extension

it originally grows in the north of the North American continent - mostly in Canada, where it is an important economic tree

Significance

in Slovakia it is grown as an ornamental park tree
mainly its conical growth form (cultivar) Conica is used - it grows slowly and thickens well, grows to a height of 2 m
in Canada it is an important economic tree
